Week 1 Orientation (English Vocabulary and Etymology)


1. Prefix  /ˈpri fɪks/ noun-Grammar an affix placed before a word(in front of the word  )
Example: DE-negative / remove,such as deactivated( means stop working)

2.Root /rut, rʊt/ noun-a word that doesn't need the prefix or suffix
Example: Aqua(means water) and Arbor(means tree)

3. Suffix /ˈsʌf ɪks/-Grammar. An affix placed after a word( the end of the word)
Example: ess- female,such as actress(means woman who acts )


Vocaburary

1.detriment /ˈdɛ trə mənt/ noun-disadvantage or damage

Example:Conversely, one could argue that in 2012 the impact of these groups was overestimated, this time to the detriment of Republicans.

2.dexterous /ˈdɛk strəs, -stər əs/ adjective-skillful and clever
Examples: It is her dexterous intelligence that keeps it all carefully balanced. 
                          

3.anthropomorphic/ˌæn θrə pəˈmɔr fɪk/ adjective-treating gods, animals as if  they had a human form
Examples:While a narrator spins anthropomorphic tales about the deity.


History of English (notes)
1. 400 ---Roman(Latin) Celtic languages

2. 7th Anglo---Saxon (Germanic)

3.1066 William, Normans invaded England(French)

4.French(words 25% from latin)+Anglo(grammar and only short word)=English

5.Chinese is the first language/ English is the second
